Avoid These Big Affiliate Marketing Mistakes And You’re Golden

20 December 2009 75 views No Comment

Just like anything else, beginners are going to make some big affiliate marketing mistakes.

The good news is that if you identify these mistakes before they have a chance to happen, you have a lot better chance of not committing them!

Here are a few of the most common big affiliate marketing mistakes that are going on today-

1) Promote benefits and feelings- not the product.

This is something a lot of the top salespeople today believe in. People don’t buy programs, products, or features- they buy the benefits and feelings that come with the product.

For example, giving the characteristics of a new HD television might impress some people, but a lot of people don’t care.

On the other hand, what if you talk about how the television will help the customer feel like they’re right next to their favorite actor, really feeling like they’re in the movie?

Don’t you think this second method has a better chance of giving the customer what they really want?

2) Research, research, and more research!

This ultimately leads to possibly the worst big affiliate marketing mistake- not promoting the right product!

Or you may end up promoting the right product, but not targeting the right crowd.

Another pitfall you can fall into is getting the right crowd, but not answering their questions. In other words, not really giving them what they want- just dangling the product in front of them and hoping they bite.

Think of it this way- for affiliate marketers, research is preparation. Great preparation allows for great execution, which creates exponentially more sales!

3) Not building a list.

You’ve heard it time and again- build a list! However most affiliate marketers (myself included for a really long time) didn’t think it was worth it for one of the following reasons:

- Too expensive
- Too much hassle
- Email filters make it useless
- I don’t know how
- High enough traffic will give me enough sales

The truth is, building a list is something you can’t afford not to do!

Common marketing knowledge and research says that a customer generally has to see something at least three times until they purchase it.

By only showing them the product one time and hoping that works, you’re going against the curve!

By building a list not only can you point your customers to a product multiple times, but you can also market other products to them, or use the list to create a joint venture with another company.

This means one repeat customer can generate hundreds if not thousands of dollars in revenue. Now you see why not building a list is such a big affiliate marketing mistake?

4) Losing motivation after a few falls.

Nobody likes to fail- even very successful people hate failing- and they fail all the time, just like you and I.

So what’s the difference between very successful affiliate marketers and those who quit? Just one thing…

The winners get back up when they fall, write down lessons learned, then get back into it.

Really, that’s about it. A lot of us would like to think we always do that, but it’s very easy to just stay down when you fall, or at least take a long time to stand back up.

Treat each failure as one giant step closer to success. You always learn more from failure than from success, so use it as a teacher and press on!

There are lots of things to do wrong with affiliate marketing- this is just some of the really big affiliate marketing mistakes. Whatever you do, make sure you avoid these, pick up tips and lessons learned from other affiliate marketers, and you’re well on your way. Good luck!
